Day 15

Tracie Thoms
Jodi, from Pale Moon

She was ten when her older sister Sarah was killed in a convenience store robbery. Their parents have always hated the idea of Supernaturals. Even after their child was killed, they couldn't cope with the idea of what she is now, hate the thought of her being 'stuck' between worlds-- and so they've never been to visit. Jodi, however, moved to an apartment less than a mile away as soon as she turned eighteen, and when Elspeth bought the former convenience store a couple of years later to start her coffee shop, she immediately applied for a job as a waitress. She and Elspeth are the only two Normals on staff.

Also cast as:

Eris, from the Greek Pantheon series
The Goddess of discord, strife, and rivalry, she delights in a good game of Torment the Humans. When that begins to bore her (she does enjoy playthings that don't die quite so quickly), she turns her attention to her fellow immortals. She and Ares are best friends, largely because they're the only ones who can stand each other's company for more than five minutes. It's one of her schemes that sets the second Olympian war in motion. She couldn't be more proud.

Tania Raymonde
Medusa

She was a worker in one of Athena's temples, completely loyal to the Goddess, until Apollo came along. She was charmed by him at first, but knew she didn't want to give up everything she'd worked so hard to become for the sake of a brief tryst with a God.

Problem was, he didn't take 'no' for an answer.

Athena discovered them, in her temple, and believed her fellow Deity's word over the mortal's. Medusa was cursed to be repulsive to everyone from then on, and to turn to stone anyone who dared actually look her in the eye.

She hides, not wanting to hurt any innocent people-- she does not count the occasional Heroes who come looking for the 'monster' to slay as innocent-- until Perseus comes along. With his help, she plans to do what she's been dreaming of for years . . . take down the Gods.

changeyourstars8: (Aphrodite)

Perseus
Nathan Fillion

Years ago, he was one of the famed Heroes. He still benefits from that, attending the best parties and never having to wait in line in any restaurant. What not even his best friend knows is that he's a Hero largely due to taking credit for others' work. But when one of Andromeda's relatives seriously offends Poseidon, she makes a drastic deal to get him to back off. And now Perseus has to do his part alone, unable to ride on anyone else's coattails.

Andromeda
Stana Katic

A much beloved Daughter of the City, Andromeda's never wanted for anything. She puts on a show of being shallow and frivolous, never photographed without a recent purchase from an expensive store on her arm, but she's much more serious than she'll ever admit to the press. She works tirelessly behind the scenes to improve things for the people she considers 'her' citizens. After making a deal with Poseidon, she's counting on Perseus, but her best friend might not be as much help as he'd always promised he would be.

Day 12

Jun. 3rd, 2011 08:24 am
changeyourstars8: (Dancing Through Life)

Bradley Cooper
Logan, from Jia's Charms

Logan is a charmer. Growing up in an abusive household, he learned young how to hide any emotion that could be used to hurt him. As an adult, he's used to putting up a convincing front in order to manipulate people. So it knocks him for a loop when, on what's supposed to be his Last Job, he begins to actually care about some of the people he's supposed to be manipulating.

Don't have him cast as anyone else yet, but he's adorable and I like him, so I'm sure he'll be popping up somewhere later on. Probably in the Greek Pantheon series, since that one's developing into a Hugely Epic Cast type of thing. :-)

Day 11

changeyourstars8: (Striptease)
((I haven't forgotten about this meme, really))

Today's entry is in honor of the fact that this character really started talking to me again this weekend, and now he and another character in Pale Moon will have their very own prequel! Not sure how long it's going to be yet-- probably novella length, if that-- but I'll be putting it up as a freebie download once I'm done with it as an introduction to the universe.

Naveen Andrews
Alan Bishop, from Pale Moon

Part of the cleanup crew at Abigail's. He keeps odd hours, which Elspeth puts up with given the whole 'vampire' thing. Nobody's exactly sure how old he is, or when he was Turned. He doesn't say much, thinking that keeping to himself will get people to leave him alone. Instead, it seems to flip a "I can change him and he will love me forever!" switch in some of the clientele.

Also cast as:

Xavierre, from Stealing Time
He took on a job as a Guard as a favor to his best friend. While something like that works out in a small, nonviolent village, being assigned the same post on a spaceship where everybody hates everybody else and there's a murderer lurking somewhere on board doesn't go so well. He does the best he can, but truth is he'd rather be in Temple or flirting with his longtime friend, Maia.

Poseidon, from the Greek Pantheon series
He's long suspected that Zeus rigged the contest that left him in charge of Olympus, while Hades was sent to the Underworld and he himself was basically banished to the ocean. He just doesn't care much, because he prefers to be far away from there. Given the minor river Gods always vying for more territory, the nymphs' constant practical jokes, and Circe insisting on continuing to turn random sailors into animals no matter how many times he's lectured her about it, he's got his hands full. He didn't even know about the first War until a few weeks after it was over. Unfortunately for his peace of mind, he's not going to be able to stay out of it this time around.

Amanda Seyfried
Daphne, from the Greek Pantheon series

For most of her life, she's been happy. The daughter of a river god, she's wanted for nothing, able to roam most anywhere she likes. She met the love of her life, and though they have to keep things very private (due to not wanting the attention/meddling from everyone else on Olympus) she doesn't mind. Everything's perfect.

And then Apollo notices her.

Matthew Gray Gubler
Danny Evans from Pale Moon

Danny is the latest addition to the waitstaff at Abby's. He put “Normal” on his application, but it comes out-- given that it's kindof hard to hide the fact that he's always carrying a little cactus in his apron pocket-- that he's the child of a human man and a dryad. The fact that he carries part of his spirit on the outside of his body made him enough of an oddity that he couldn't fit in with the Normals at school, but it also didn't give him any 'cool' powers. He's been trying to learn enough to become a warlock, with mixed results (Elspeth says that while she understands his reasons, if he summons another horde of gremlins she's going to have to fire him).

He is so, so much fun to write, and he was one of the first characters to pop into my head when I started doing profiles for Pale Moon.

Samantha Ferris
Hera, from the Greek Pantheon series

Hera is the Goddess of marriage and childbirth, but her own marriage is miserable, and she spends quite a bit of time going after her husband's children. The last time she went after the true source of her problems, Zeus hung her in the sky. A part of her is certain that if it weren't for her son Hephaestus's interference, she'd still be there.

After the first War, things are fairly calm for a while . . . Zeus apologizes and promises to change; she believes him. Then Eris 'accidentally' lets slip that he's been sneaking down to the mortal realm in disguise, up to his old games.

Hera knows that she has to confront Zeus again, but this time she's going to enlist help. Still, some old habits die hard, and Aphrodite's going to have her work cut out for her keeping Zeus's latest child and her mother safe.

Paul Bettany
Patrick Bryant from Pale Moon

His spouse was also killed in the Werewolf Riots. Unlike Aiden, who was protesting against legislation that would allow Supernatural Detectors into public schools, his husband was there protesting for it. Patrick leaned toward David's side of the argument, but wasn't really involved until after the Riots. He hangs around Abby's a lot because he thinks sooner or later he'll get Elspeth to listen to him, to agree that things would be a lot less painful all around if Supernaturals and Normals stayed away from each other.

Day 6

Apr. 10th, 2011 10:05 am
changeyourstars8: (Elphaba)

Elizabeth Banks
Lauren from Jia's Charms

First saw Elizabeth Banks in Slither, which is still one of my favorite movies. When I started work on Jia's Charms, I thought she'd be perfect for Lauren.

Lauren looks exactly like the quintessential blond-perfect-princess type. Vance thinks she's way out of his league and so doesn't even try; Wil thinks she's out of his league but tries anyway. What should've been a real-life version of "Uptown Girl" ends badly: her parents do not react well to her pregnancy, and she panics and runs, leaving Wil to raise their daughter. Over a decade later, Vance, who's still friends with both of them, engineers a meeting.

While a lot of the characters I write are completely from my imagination, several have traits that I nab from myself (some call it writing what you know, I call it cheap therapy. ;-)). Lauren and I have depression/PPD in common.

Day 5

Apr. 9th, 2011 11:18 am
changeyourstars8: (Haunted)

Jasmine Guy
Elspeth Jansen, from Pale Moon

Elspeth's husband was killed in the Werewolf Riots of 2003, leaving her with a child to raise and a business to run. When she and Aiden started their coffee shop, Abby's, it was just an everyday hangout, though the sign "ALL types of customers welcome" signified that they wouldn't turn away a witch or two so long as they were polite. After Aiden's death, Elspeth turned Abby's into a 24-hour business and tacked up another sign, forbidding the use of Supernatural Detectors on her property. This brought her under fire from various Normal Rights groups, and now her business relies almost solely upon Supernaturals.
changeyourstars8: (Aphrodite)
Here's Day 4!

Kirsten Vangsness
Aphrodite, from the Greek Pantheon series

There was no way I could cast anybody else as the Goddess of Love and Beauty; she is just 100% fantastic and perfect.

Aphrodite generally minds her own business up on Olympus. She doesn't get involved in constant quarrels over the morality of their lives, like Iris does; she doesn't chase after mortals like Hera (okay, so she chases after some of them, but with entirely different intentions). When the first War came, she did her best to stay out of it.

Then came the aftermath. Zeus, deciding to 'apologize' to Hephaestus for badly injuring him, gifted him Aphrodite as a wife.

Aphrodite was never consulted about this.

For a time she tries to go about things normally and just pretends that she doesn't have a husband, but eventually she acknowledges that trying to stay quiet and peaceful and happy all the time hasn't gotten her any advantages at all, and maybe it's time for a change.
