o.O

What in the everloving hell?

As if I needed any more incentive to not get cable back. Thanks for backing up my decision, idiots.

Because nothing's more hilarious than introducing a television awards show with a mock sexual assault!

Yeah. Geez, just the pictures made me want to hit something with a mallet. I would've been cussing for an hour straight if I'd actually seen that shit.

I want to know what Ms Klum thought of it.

[identity profile] allthelivesofme.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd be really curious to see some kind of follow-up interview with her.

[identity profile] allthelivesofme.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
On second thought, let me revise that to "interview given by a sane source instead of one whose opinion would be, "OMG that was soooo funny and edgy!!!" Might be hard to find. :-P

Ever feel like you're one of a few sane people in a mad world?

[identity profile] allthelivesofme.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Just about every day now. :-P

It was really bad, and that wasn't even the only sexist or misogynistic moment--later Craig Ferguson groped Brooke Shields on stage as part of a bit, and Tom Bergeron dropped Heidi Klum hard enough to leave bruises to demonstrate what "comedy" is (there was a picture of them this morning at an afterparty with her showing off the bruise on her hip and him grinning at the camera). Oh, and we had the "Deal or No Deal" models wander through to be ogled, too. Even when Julia-Louis Dreyfuss came out to present, she had to do so immediately after they showed the clip from Seinfeld with her character discussing whether or not she masturbates.

It was really sad to see them pretend to honor smart, funny women like Mary Tyler Moore and Tina Fey while consistently undercutting that message ALL night with the constant reminders that no, actually women are just sexual objects for men's consumption.

So yeah, you didn't miss anything.

I think you're (for values of 'you' including [livejournal.com profile] allthelivesofme) right about it being sexist, but when I watched it, I felt like the sexist part was that a woman isn't a woman if she isn't in a short skirt. It didn't play like an assault to me, maybe because it looked more like pulling aside a curtain than ripping off someone's clothes.

The most WTF-did-I-really-just-see-that moment was that thing with Craig Ferguson, actually.

But it was two guys tearing off her clothes. If she'd stripped down herself it would've gotten a huge eyeroll from me (because of the whole "You're not really female unless you're dolled up!" message that you mentioned), but wouldn't have set off the same 'massive skeeze alert' red flags.

And yeah, that thing with Ferguson was beyond the pale. :-P

'massive skeeze alert' red flag

Well, one of them was William Shatner, so, skeeze alert right there. All he had to do was stand on stage to get a red flag. *g*

Wait, what?! I heard about the Shields/Ferguson thing (would've dearly loved it if her knee had decided to 'respect' his crotch) but hadn't heard that one yet.

Definitely didn't miss anything.

Oh, for fuck's sake. "You're not a real woman unless you're baring skin! And a man has ripped your clothes off!"

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Tell me about it.

I mean, if Heidi had just pulled her own clothes off, it'd be mildly obnoxious, but at least slightly amusing, and it wouldn't have the coercive undertones.

Now, if the male presenters had then torn THEIR clothes off, to reveal that they were all wearing similar outfits...THAT would have been funny, and awesome.

Oh, so agreed. That skit I would've been looking up on YouTube.

[identity profile] flewellyn.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I mean, that would have been transgressive and pushed boundaries of society! It would have been legendary! This was...just sick.
