Well, the comments to the entry go a long way in explaining that remark. From what I've read about it, Rusty listened more to his preacher/spiritual adviser/whatever you want to call him who told him that people should have big families, etc., than to the doctor who said "this is dangerous; she is not well right now and having more kids will make it worse".
I also remember some news reports soon after it happened talking about how he insisted that she home-school their kids. Being at home with that many small children would be stressful enough on someone who's completely mentally healthy; I can't imagine what it was like for her.
