I should've known that sooner or later this would happen-- that out of the TV shows I've started to watch and like sooner or later one of the ongoing ones would do something that'd make me stop watching. And given the reckless borderline-between-offensive-and-dark-comedy stance of Rescue Me, I should've guessed that one.
I've been keeping a vague track of what was going on in the show, planning to buy the second season. Then I found out that in a recent episode, Tommy raped Janet (the main character; his estranged wife)
I went around to various fan sites, and the excuses I saw churned my stomach. I can't count how many times in the last thirty minutes I've read the words 'she wanted it'.
She apparently tried to fight him off. That isn't 'no'? He apparently hit her. That's just fine now? In any account, he drives off with a grin on his face.
I don't care if they use this show to open a 'meaningful dialogue' or some such bullshit. This is the main character, someone previously portrayed as messed up but generally sympathetic. And he's struck a woman and then had sex with her despite her attempts to fight him off. Then went away grinning.
I will not condone that by spending any more money on the series, or keeping the first season of it in my house.
