3. How do you come up with names, for characters (and for places if you're writing about fictional places)?
Once in a while a name will just pop into my head and I'll write it down to use for a character later, but most of the time I'll come up with a general character profile and then go to one of these two sites:

http://babynames.com/
Places is basically the same thing, though for those I'll a) switch some letters around and b) usually look in the phone book first.
