My prompt, from [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]: "A quest story involving unlikely band groupies. Fantasy elements optional."

'Optional', hah. This is me we're talking about. ;-)

Type: HBO series.

Opening Theme: "Between", by Vienna Teng

Setting: Alternate universe where Euterpe, the Muse of music, is the central deity and Sirens exist. Most Sirens are worshiped as demigods in their territories, though some aren't as in control of the local politics as they think.

Outline: Euterpe's Mark, a small opal-like stone set into the skin of the upper arm, is what signifies a Siren. This Mark can appear at any time in a person's life, though eventually-- sometimes after fifty years, sometimes after five weeks-- they fall off, and powers fade. The Marks are kept as valued mementos by their previous owners, or sometimes put into museums. Legend has it that the Mosaic, a tablet blessed by Euterpe herself, will impart youth and a Siren's powers to its owner indefinitely once it's been completed with one hundred of these former Marks. When a Siren gets evidence that the legend is real, she sends several of her subjects out to gather the Marks for her.

Arc of Season 1: Some of the other territories aren't safe in the best of times. Add in the fact that their mission is to gather what many consider holy artifacts, and that makes it worse. But someone else also believes in the Mosaic, and instead of talking his or her way into taking discarded Marks, this gatherer just kills current Sirens to steal their gift. When the timing of the kill coincides a second time with their arrival in a new territory, the group realizes it's either someone following them-- or it is one of them.

Cast:

Marina
Rosario Dawson

She's thrilled to have been chosen for this mission. Partly because she worships the ground her Siren walks on, and partly because she thinks if she does well, she can talk to Sotiria about joining her band, or even being endorsed for a solo career of her own (something which is nearly unheard of-- many people believe singing without Euterpe's blessing is a direct insult to the Goddess, and react accordingly).

Aikaterine (Kat)
Zoe Saldana

Marina's big sister. Their parents are kind but very flighty people, so she took up the Adult of the Family mantle early on. Marina finds her to be overprotective to the point of smothering lately, and so she's thrilled when she gets the opportunity to go on this mission and Kat doesn't. She's not so thrilled when Kat shows up anyway, determined to go along and make sure she stays safe.

Isaac
Ralph Fiennes

A singer, but not a Siren. He relocated to this territory five years ago after things got a bit heated in his home territory. He made a pretty good living as a singer for a while there, so he thinks that was worth several death threats and a few actual attempts on his life. Marina idolizes him, believing that with a good endorsement she can get the success without the threats. Kat thinks he's a bad influence (and the fact that he's a huge flirt does not help matters), so she hates him on general principle. The feeling is mutual.

Miriam
Jewel Staite

She's very shy and hates the idea of fame, which is partly why she hides the Euterpe's Mark on her arm. The other reason is that two Sirens never occupy the same territory-- she knows if she reveals what she is, she'll be pressured to move on, and she doesn't want to leave her home.

Sotiria (formerly Sarah)
Vienna Teng

Their territory's Siren. She has no real interest in behind-the-scenes maneuvering, the day-to-day running of the territory, or even meeting with her admirers; ever since her Mark appeared, her sole interest is singing. So she needs quite a bit of help to get the business end of the job done, which is where Leah comes in.

Leah (formerly Lysandra)
Rachel Weisz

The territory's Siren before Sotiria. Wanting to retain at least part of her former position, she agrees to help the new Siren out. Never really happy with the arrangement, she plans on using the Mosaic to get her voice back. Though Sotiria is the one who talks to the group about their quest, Leah is the one who selected the names. Most were at random, but two were purposeful: Isaac, since she sees his career as blasphemy; and Adam, since he never supported her during their marriage and she thinks it's poetic justice to have him unwittingly help her out now.

Adam
Daniel Craig

Seems happy to go along, but that's an act. He doesn't care for the social hierarchy the Sirens are involved in. Leah used to pray to get a Euterpe's Mark, but neither of them really expected it to happen. When it did, she threw herself into her newfound career. After a while, it seemed to him that she cared more for her 'groupies' than for him, and he left. He's sure the selection of this group was rigged, is also sure that he can't prove it. Since he wants to come home to a still-viable business when this is done, he goes along.

Timaeus
Ewan McGregor

A former Siren himself, he moved to this territory when Leah was still in power. He worked as part of her entourage for a while, and now he works for Sotiria. He's selected to go along so that he can report back the conditions in other territories, and also report if anyone in the group isn't happy with the way things are being run. Seen as a toady by some, though Marina and Miriam are quick to defend him, saying that he shouldn't be insulted for helping out their Siren. The people who don't like him make a point out of calling him Tim or Timmy, which he hates.

Nikolas
Oded Fehr

Given that he's a reporter sent along to record their mission for posterity, the others expect him to be constantly in their faces with questions. Instead, he keeps to himself, hanging back so much that the rest of the travelers tend to forget he's there (oftentimes with embarrassing results). He stays detached from their 'ridiculous squabbles', until discovering Miriam's secret tosses him right into the personal problems he'd been rolling his eyes at the day before.

Korinna
Kirsten Vangsness

After an incident in another territory ends with one of them almost getting killed, Aikaterine insists that they hire a guide. Korinna helps them get through other territories, largely because she has friends in most of them (or at least people she can pay off).
