Waitwaitwait *that* was why Ellen had to die? OMG. I mean, I hated that they died but the way the writers had them go out was so awesome and true to character that I could almost forgive it, but with that being why . . . AUGH. I really wish I could have the opportunity to see the show exactly the way the writers imagined it, without any pressure from the CW or certain segments of fandom who are still under the No Girls Allowed mentality.
And Jo getting a bad rap in fandom is part of the reason I've stayed out of fandom-at-large . . . I ventured in and heard something about her being a 'tramp' for wearing low-cut jeans and flirting with Dean (while meanwhile Dean himself tries to have sex with anything female and breathing and that's not criticized) and I backed right on out again.
But yeah, Ellen definitely makes my list of Favorite TV Characters Ever. :-)
