Serenity parts 1 and 2, and The Train Job

Don't expect much coherency out of these reviews . . . lol
Chris and I are planning to watch one episode a night, until the weekend when I don't have to be up at 4 a.m., at which point we're probably going to be pulling an all-nighter watching the rest. :-) Spoiler-stuff under the cut.
First off, I want the ship. Firefly model indeed. *S*
I also want Inara's wardrobe.
Oddly enough, I don't really like the opening theme much. I love the words (there will sooooo be lyric and quote icons for this show), so it's either the tune or the singer. Dunno. Maybe it'll grow on me.
Is it weird that one of the things I find most endearing about Mal is the way he kills people? LOL "Darn." *BOOT* And the way he walked onto the ship and shot the informant who was holding River hostage . . . that was so much a Trader move that I almost squeaked. I love when characters in movies or TV shows remind me of our novel characters. :-D
Zoe is my new role model. "I need this man to tear my clothes off." Hee. Those two are fantastic together. And I'm still getting used to Alan Tudyk's voice in non-Wat mode.
"Nothing. I just wanted you to face me so she could get behind you." Love. Mal. And. Zoe.
I need Firefly/Serenity icons.
Mal and Inara-- dang, El Tango de Roxanne, anyone? And I will place my bets now that we don't see anything deeper for them other than the semi-hostile flirting until the movie, because Whedon was probably waiting until at least season two for that, and. . .
Kaylee is just too cool for words. It did freak me out when she got shot, though, because I found myself thinking-- "Oh, she's fine. She's in the movie, right? No, wait. Is she? I remember Mal and Zoe and River in the pictures . . . and I've seen icons of Kaylee with the kickass parasol and a couple of jokes about her and strawberries, but those have both already happened-- crap. I don't know!!"
Of course, since there have been a couple of character-death fakeouts and since I'm reasonably sure everyone makes it to the movie and since I've seen various "Joss Whedon is an evil evil man" type icons, someone will probably die in the movie. Which is making me reluctant to watch Serenity, because I love all these characters already. Except Jayne, who is still in very, very iffy territory due to the way he wanted to leave Mal and Zoe behind, and the way he keeps treating Kaylee. My instinctive love of smartasses will probably do me in yet again, though (Sawyer, I'm looking at you).
River . . . haven't seen enough of her yet to truly form an opinion one way or the other. Though Chris did amuse me by looking at me, the screen, and then back at me before saying, "That's creepy. She does kindof remind me of you."
Shepherd and Inara have the best conversations. I'm looking forward to seeing more of those two.
The actor playing Simon really reminds me of Joaquin Phoenix sometimes. Not a whole lot, but once in a while it's worthy of a double-take. And I really like his character so far. Especially when he drugged Jayne. ;-)
And Kath-- watching the first episode, I remembered that it was Morena Baccarin I had in mind for Nayara! :-) What do you think?
The Reavers are freaky, freaky, freaky.
Saving the best for last-- when they're scavenging in the first episode, and then later when the ship takes off: I heard no noise. They didn't try to pull the ultra-annoying thing of ships going "whooooosh" in outer space! I could hug everybody involved for that alone.

Date: 2006-05-03 07:40 pm (UTC)It's weird seeing people see it in the intended order. When we were watching it on tv, my mom called after the first episode and said "I don't think I'm gonna watch this, because obviously I missed the first episode. I had no clue who these people were." Sad stuff. We did talk her into sticking with it and she became a fast fan.
The thing I'm always VERY quick to remind people of, is that Joss Whedon is famous (infamous?) for his penchant to off lead characters. I mean, for pete's sake, he killed Buffy off and she stayed that way for months. He actually had people wondering if he was going to bring her back, and the show was named after her! But even the heartbreak of losing a Whedon character is possible to survive and totally worth falling in love with each and every character.
ZOIC *is* amazing and I only hope that my company can rival them one day, because they make it look so easy.
Steph, the most most most important thing for you to do, after you've gotten through all the episodes (and not before) is to watch the commentaries. You will never keep up in good, true browncoat conversations if you don't know some of the tidbits that you learn on those.
And oh my... hmm. I had no idea that Steph wasn't ALREADY watching Veronica Mars. This won't do.

Date: 2006-05-03 07:46 pm (UTC)I wasn't too thrilled by the "The Train Job," but I found the characters intriguing enough, and Mal kicking a guy into a turbine always wins you points. So I stuck with it, and I eventually began to love the show. And then it was cancelled.

I almost died laughing listening to the "War Stories" commentary.

It really won't. I'm sure she'd love to be able to comment on more than ten percent of my posts.

::nod:: And don't be surprised if you start getting comments on episode reviews that are a year and a half old or something once I get those DVDs...

Date: 2006-05-03 07:51 pm (UTC)And here's a confession for you-- I've seen the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but I've never seen an episode of the TV series.

Date: 2006-05-03 10:13 pm (UTC)And you have to see Angel. Even as much as I passionately hated how they took it, it was still a must see. And if you don't watch it, you don't get to see another classic Joss moment with Angel dancing at a party. Angel is also worth watching for Doyle alone ::drools::
