I have a confession to make, concerning Ana Lucia. And lost-forum.com. And the fact that while looking around in their 'other pairings' forum because I was curious, I saw a thread for Ana/Sayid and I did not automatically loathe the idea. Going to be discussing a whole bunch of spoilers, so the rest of it's going behind a cut.

Now, when Ana Lucia first came on the show, I hated her. Not because of the 'oh, you just don't like strong women!' reasons that I hear people spouting off, but because I don't like anybody who acts the way she did without apologizing when it becomes clear that they were wrong. I hated Sawyer in the first few episodes, too, and now he's one of my favorites.

But then I started reading fanfiction about her (check out [livejournal.com profile] ficangel's Blood and Fire), and that made me see her in a different light. And I thought, 'well, the show might go this direction with her, so I'll give it a chance. Maybe. Possibly. Still not a fan, though'.

Then she started showing a sense of humor. And she apologized. So I started to like her, but then she had sex with Sawyer and I realized that the rumors about her character getting killed off were true. (I saw an icon once that had a picture of Shannon in Sayid's tent, with the caption "What's that rule about sex and death?" Yeah. I need that icon)

At the start of her appearance, I was hoping that the writers would kill her off. Now I'm irritated about it, because there were so many directions they could've gone with her. The first time I heard someone mention the idea of Sayid/Ana, I thought they were nuts, but then the two had more scenes together, and . . . yeah. I saw something there. Granted, that could be mainly because of Naveen "why yes, I do have chemistry with most everyone on the island" Andrews; I haven't seen enough of Michelle Rodriguez's work to tell with her.

Either way, that got me thinking about the idea, and it made a weird kind of sense. It was a odd balance to strike, too, because if he'd blamed her for Shannon's death I wouldn't have thought twice about it, and if they'd done something like God forbid flirted I probably would've recoiled from the screen and sent various "what are you smoking" emails to the writers. Instead there was just enough of a 'what-if' to their scenes to get my imagination going and make me mutter, "No, you are not writing fanfic. Stop it" to myself.

It probably never would've worked on the show. For one thing, for the making-sense to continue, anything between them would have to be quite a while down the road, and I love LOST so I wouldn't want it to overextend itself. But I would've at least liked to see a friendship develop between them, because even if I'm insane with the 'chemistry' angle, their characters do have a lot in common.

People on the lost-forum.com board voted in the tagline "Sayana: Because Fate Loves Irony" and that about sums it up. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to see if I can find some good fanfiction. I'll give you a picture before I go, though. :-) From lost-media.com:

I have to say, I really would have dug the idea of Sayid/Ana Lucia, if for nothing else than picturing the fits that the actors would have thrown backstage. Naveen really does have the amazing ability to have chemistry with anyone and everyone.

Well. I know I've listed my opinions on how the whole Ana Lucia thing went down, and I've written my defense of her actions in her first ep, but it really was just a cock-up from start to finish. MRod was probably a bad choice of actress from the beginning because she's just so volatile, she blew her first flash-back episode by napping through it (when it could have been her 'Con Man' if she had put even half the effort into her performance that Josh did), then the DUI happened, then ABC threw a fit and bailed on her, forcing the entire mytharc to come to a grinding halt. I really am starting to come around and think that she was going to play a bigger role in the overall arc than being quickly written in just because the actress became available, as we all supposed last season.

Yeah. Cock-up. Especially since this final run-in with the law and the realization that she was losing out on a job in a very highly-rated television show seems to have at long last straightened MRod's act out for her. Go rent 'Girlfight' if you want to see more of her-it was her first major role, before she was typecast into the Tough Latina, and while she's very much the ass-kicker in it, there is a range there.

*puts Girlfight on the to-rent list*

And yeah, her flashback episode seemed so weird to me, because generally I'm very sympathetic to vigilante actions. I probably shouldn't be, but oh well. ;-) I understood and agreed with Kate completely, for example. I'm not sure if it was mostly MR's performance, or the fact that Ana Lucia didn't need to go vigilante since the cops already had him and were going to put him away, but that episode didn't make me feel any sympathy toward her, and I was near-certain it would.

if for nothing else than picturing the fits that the actors would have thrown backstage

Apparently I'm missing critical, need-to-know information. ;-D

Apparently Naveen and Maggie were great friends, hence the chemistry that led to Sayid/Shannon, and Naveen and MRod did not get on with one another at all.

She had a complete lack of affect in her acting choices that night that really bothered me, because on paper it's an exceptionally well-written episode with a lot of parallels running beneath it's surface. I don't know what the hell was wrong with her, but that was her big chance to make her character's actions, if not defensible, at least understandable, and she blew it.

Yeah, that episode was one big mess in terms of doing what it was supposed to do. :-P Fortunately, there was fanfic to make up for it. lol
