As disgusting as the whole thing is, I am not looking forward to the White Women Opine About Black Folks & Their Relationships aspect of this, because...you know. The same reason most men need to stfu about this issue.
My problem with people wanting other Black men to call for a boycott on Chris is where the fuck was the call to boycott Ryan O'Neil from being on Bones? Surely it's not okay he beat Farrah's ass, is it? Threatened his own kid with a gun? And what about Alec Baldwin? Why does he get to be on a top rated show and no white wimmens is screaming about his abusive, psycho voice message to his child?
Let's not pretend that the standard for Black men is much different even when they are wrong, because how many rock/pop stars have beat their women to shit and people let it slide after a day or two? Plenty.
Didn't hear about the Ryan O'Neil thing (yuck, though). Alec Baldwin is a complete and utter ass and I do think the way he treated his kid should mean no hope of custody *ever* and, ideally, that everybody in his line of work would give him the evil eye whenever he tried to talk to them because again-- ass.
But you're right: though I do at least know about the Baldwin case, I don't remember it getting near as much media play. And while I remember people talking about what a jerk Baldwin is, I don't remember any interviews with people asking if he'd be invited back on a show.
Gah. As much as I want all the scorn/boycott/public derision etc. heaped on Chris Brown, I want it to happen because of what he did, not because of his skin color. I want the public as a whole to turn their backs on all guys who do crap like this until they prove that they honestly are working to change. The judgment here should come about because we honestly care about these women, not because we hold some men in constant harsher judgment and just use women as one more excuse to say, "See?! I told you that's what those people are like!"
:-( I'm not even sure I'm making sense. But as long as I'm dreaming, I'd like a pony.
Thanks for the link. And for once, reading the comments was not like rolling around in filth! (Though I unapologetically use the words "male" and "female" in discussing gender, because so much of the alternative language is inescapably loaded.)
Yeah . . . I haven't been reading Kate's blog for a terribly long time, but from what I've seen she tends to keep the trolls out of the comment section, unless it's Poke Them With Sticks Day or something.
