Lost entry

Decided to make a list concerning a 'major event' that's going to happen before the end of the season... spoilers behind cut.
Word is that one of the main 14 characters is going to die before the season is over. Further word is that it's going to be one of the men (not difficult to figure, really, since they make up 10 of the 14...)
Behind the cut are my opinions on who should live and why, and what their possible death might do to the dynamic of the show.
Listed by my "Death rating": 1-- "Why aren't you gone *yet*?!?" through 10-- "A pox on the writers if this happens."

Boone-- Okay, might as well do away with thoughts of impartiality right off the bat. I do not like Boone. (yeah, fall asleep on your watch against the Resident Island Psycho, and then call *Shannon* useless. Gah.) Out of all the men, he's probably the one I'd miss the least. If he died, it'd affect Locke (who basically has this whole Master-Padawan thing going on with him right now, he'd have to find someone else) and Shannon (how she deals with his death, what she might tell the others about their actual relationship to each other) the most. As for the others-- ummm... *does* he do anything, besides snipe at Shannon and stare at that hatch with Locke? Opinion might change after seeing more backstory for him. Dunno. Death rating: 1
Jack-- I did hear that they were intending to kill Jack off in the pilot, so they might make up for that at the end of the season. Hmm. If he died, we would get a *lot* of Kate-centric stuff (especially if she accidentally had something to do with it. Responsible for the deaths of two men who're important to her? I can sense the Extreme Drama from here). And the island's sole doctor would be gone. That'd transfer a lot of attention onto Sun (who, so far as I know, is the closest person they have to a healer after Jack). And their-- however reluctant-- leader would be gone, too, leaving a void to fill. Locke might try, or Sawyer, or both. Interesting possibilities. Death rating: 2
Jin-- Okay, this guy got some of my sympathy in his background episode... and then he got rid of it again by the way he treated Sun. Maybe he'll redeem himself before season's end... though, knowing this show, that'll happen just before he gets eaten by an OMGWTFPOLARBEAR. Who can say. A time after his death would of course focus on Sun (especially depending on whether she's stayed on her own like she is now or followed through with any of the 'hey, check out these two' stuff the writers are pointing toward for Sun and Michael) and Michael (considering how much he's interacted with him, and how little of it has been good). Other people on the island would also have to learn how to fish. Death rating: 3
Locke: I'm *still* not entirely sure where I stand with this guy. Most of the time I like him, but he does have this whole "I know best for everyone" vibe going on. And so far he's been right in the advice (or basic shock therapy...) given to the other characters, but I'm just waiting for what happens when one of his theories turns out to be wrong. If he died, it'd affect *everyone*. Locke is one of the most omnipresent people on the island, he's helped out a lot, and he's their main hunter. So, lots of problems for the islanders/lots of new material to mine. Could go either way. ?? Death rating: 4
Michael: Not entirely sure where I stand with him, either. I really liked him in his background episode, and I know that he has a *lot* of adjustments to make in terms of suddenly being a father when he'd been involuntarily out of Walt's life for years, but... still. *Control the temper*, Michael. His being gone would definitely affect the other islanders, seeing as he's the former architect. If I were there, I'd want that guy to stick around. :-) And though Walt argues with him most of the time, the kid *definitely* doesn't need yet another caretaker disappearing from his life. I don't think the writers would do this, either (unless he dies trying to help Walt somehow. I can definitely see the Sacrifice angle being played here). Death rating: 5
Walt-- Would the writers really have the guts to kill off a child? However sometimes creepy and Firestarter-ish the kid might be? Dunno. Michael would be devastated, and Locke would have to try to find another new recruit. Most of the others seem to like Walt all right, and even if they don't really interact with him, a kid getting killed is going to knock *everyone* down a few pegs. I don't think they'll go with this one, though, especially not unless several questions about Walt's apparent conjuring abilities are answered before the end of the season. Death rating: 6
Hurley-- The comic relief and constant sanity provider cannot die. I think Hurley's the friendliest person in the bunch, and I don't think there's anyone in the main 14 who hasn't chatted with him at least a few times. Hurley provides a much needed thing on the island; helping to keep people relaxed. They're in an incredibly high-stress situation, and without some kind of break (island golf, anyone?) there would probably be a lot more fights than there already have been. But, show-wise, I can see where the writers might think that'd be a good thing. First rule of conflict-writing-- you think it's bad, make it worse. Death rating: 7
Charlie-- First off, I really doubt that the writers would kill him. 1) They already had a fake-death scare with him earlier in the season, and 2) I don't think they'd want to cause the Great LOTR Fangirls Riot of 2005. ;-) Seriously, I like Charlie. I think the man has some major issues to work through, but he seems to be making progress. If he died, that'd permanently sink the good ship Charlie Loves Babymama. A lot of other people have befriended Charlie, it'd probably hit them all pretty hard. Show-wise, I don't think it'd be a good idea. Charlie provides some welcome humor in the midst of the Jack/Kate angst, and he and Claire (friends first, growing into something else) give a balance to the Jack/Kate/Sawyer "would somebody just *do it* already" triangle and the Sayid/Shannon "near-immediate sexual tension" relationship. Death rating: 8
Sawyer: Love him or hate him, the island would not be the same without the Southern Pervert. :-) I didn't really like Sawyer much at the beginning, but he's definitely turned into one of the most interesting (and/or infuriating) characters there. Plus, eye candy factor. (hey, I told you I wasn't impartial.) Granted, in terms of tracking things for food, he's not the best (or close to it) but he is a good shot, which might very well come in handy in any upcoming confrontation with the 'others'. There's also definitely a ruthless side to him, which would also come in handy then. But I wouldn't think the writers would do this, either. There are so many funny lines that only Sawyer could pull off; as I said, island wouldn't be the same without him. Death rating: 9
Sayid: I don't even want to mention the possibility of this one. *sniffle* If they do this, the writers will make me cry. And they don't want to do that. Because if they do, I will learn the art of astral projection, float to Hawaii, and whack them about the head and shoulders with a Clue-by-Four. Of all the characters whose backstory we've seen a part of, Sayid's interests me the most. If he dies, how are we going to have more flashbacks/Nadia scenes?? I like Sayid/Shannon, but I also want to see more Sayid/Nadia, darnit. Plus, he's one of the few technological people on the island. That'll come in handy. Also, eye candy factor. And have I mentioned that if they do this, the show will not only have jumped the shark, but it will have played *leapfrog* with it?? Death rating: 10
