This story is simply amazing.

((thanks, Cleolinda, for the link! Now to read through the archives. . .))

ETA: Speaking of heroes... This kid might say she doesn't deserve to be called a hero, but I have to respectfully disagree here.

Today's charity is based in Kansas; link sent to me by [livejournal.com profile] rosevaughn.

Numana Inc.

From their website:

"Here’s what keeps us up at night:

Enough food is produced in the world for every person to have 4.3 lbs of food every day. But the reality is, hunger and starvation continues to torment children, adults and families. Numana can help you make a difference.

Our mission is to empower people to save the starving by raising awareness, providing actionable solutions and encouraging advocacy.

Through volunteer-driven, hands on meal packaging events, Numana enables others to send meals to countries where intense food insecurity exists."

They are organizing a relief effort for Japan-- if you're in the area, on March 19 there's a food packaging event, or you can donate at the website.

[livejournal.com profile] honorh is missing. Updates as they come are posted here. In the meantime people are gifting her Help Japan gifts for her LJ, to say "we're thinking of you" and to help donate a little. So far she's at 43; the person who suggested it is hoping for 100 or more. Pass the word around?

ETA: Charity Navigator has a list of reputable charities who're helping out there.

ETA: She's been found; she's safe! :-)

Project Night Night

From their website:

"Project Night Night donates over 25,000 Night Night Packages each year, free of charge, to
homeless children who need our childhood essentials to feel secure, cozy, ready to learn, and
significant. Each Night Night Package contains a new security blanket, an age-appropriate
children's book, and a stuffed animal -- all nestled inside of a new canvas tote bag. By providing objects of reliable comfort, Project Night Night reduces trauma and advances the emotional and cognitive well-being of the children we serve."

Also, considering the horrible things going on in Japan right now, linking to the Red Cross, Peace Winds, and Doctors Without Borders.
