Slowly but surely going through my LJ entries and updating my tags so that various entries are easier to find. For instance, I have a "movies" tag but never had any specific movies listed; same with the books Kath and I have written. Have a "writing" tag; no book titles.

This job would be easier if I didn't have 20,000 journal entries. But at least it lets me avoid the pile of dishes in the sink. ;-)

Just busy categorizing recipes, going through my books, organizing story notes, getting ready to paint the upstairs office, and trying to keep an eye on Kaylee, who is now tall enough to reach the top of my desk. Eeek.

And because I really did intend to start answering these but instead keep forgetting because my brain won't keep information around for longer than 3.8 seconds:

[Error: unknown template qotd]

Basically, my Yahoo sidebar in my mailbox alerts me to anything really huge going on, and reading my LJ friendslist also keeps me in the know. Slacktivist and Leonard Pitts Jr. articles are my newspaper-type sources, though I read them both online, too. ;-) TV news is not allowed in our house.
changeyourstars8: (MASH)
Earlier, about the only attention Kaylee would pay to the TV was when we were watching That 70s Show and the theme song came on-- she'd crawl right over to the TV, wave her arms around and squeak, and then as soon as the song was over head right back over to her toys. But now if something loud happens she'll pay attention for a few minutes, and whenever a commercial comes on with a dog or a cat, she won't take her eyes off the TV. She's really starting to take those things in, which translates into one thing:

Time to go through our movies.

Chris and I went through our shelves of movies last night and divided them into "things it's okay to watch while Kaylee is awake" and "not unless we want to traumatize her for life".

We'll be adding and taking away things soon based on how she reacts to things once she starts talking. Right now all we have to go on is whether she starts crying or something in response to what's on the TV (which so far she hasn't done). So since she can't give us many cues yet, our criteria is pretty simple: no violence, and not much language. Things like Stand By Me will be added once she's learned the "do not repeat this word" rule. ;-)

Scrubs is okay (the show rarely takes a serious turn, and for a medical show there's very little blood) while M*A*S*H is not (that one deals with some pretty heavy stuff, especially in the later seasons).

RENT is okay (some language, but not nearly as much as the stage show, and what little violence there is happens off-screen) while Man of La Mancha is not (off-screen or not, anything with a rape scene is on the To Wait list).

And after a discussion, we decided that anything with vampires and demons and whatnot would wait until she's older, even with something campy like Lost Boys, just so we can be sure of what she's able to handle/what she's interested in.

Because I'm nosy curious, for those of you who are parents, how did you handle this one? What are some things that you thought your kid would handle just fine that caused a freakout, or that you thought would cause a freakout but they just brushed it off?

Nnnnn.

I've just spent the past I don't know how long uploading files, resizing images, reorganizing my graphics folder (500+ images with no categories whatsoever? Hi, headache waiting to happen) and you know what I feel like now? This:

So we're off to see if we can find a copy of Reservation Road. Which will most likely depress the hell out of me, but still: new Joaquin Phoenix movie.
changeyourstars8: (The Stand)
Okay, aside from the fact that a good part of it was spent sitting on the couch watching The Stand. And now I'm reading the book again-- haven't done so since the seventh grade, but now that I have the 'complete, uncut and illustrated' edition. . . :-)

On the getting-stuff-done side, though, Kath and I just finished the first draft of a new novel. Now comes the editing. lol I got one run-through done on a series of ours; now I only have fifteen pages of notes and new scenes and changes to make instead of fifty! Getting there.

Finishing an edit on that series is one of the things on my 'get done before the baby's born' list. So was going through my CDs and weeding out some stuff, which I got done this morning. Other thing is to go through old bills and financial papers and get stuff organized, which may or may not get done depending on how motivated I can get to go upstairs and sort through the Desk Drawer of Cluttery Doom.

Namely, where I get further proof that sanity only makes up .001 percent of my brain.

3:00

"Okay, Chris has gone to work; time to do the same. I'm going to get some laundry done and some dishes and then maybe I'll dust, too. . ."

3:45

"Yay, livejournal is fun. La la la."

4:30

"...crap."

4:45

"Have I eaten today?"

5:45

"So maybe chores can wait until tomorrow. Today I'll just go through my CDs and see what I can cull out to sell on the next run to Joplin."

6:30

Some work is done! *Hallelujah Chorus plays*

6:40

"Hey look, that user has a nice Ralph Fiennes icon. I need one."
"Actually, you need to do something resembling work today."
"I did."
"Less than an hour of it does not count."
"Yeah, yeah. Y'know, there are not enough Strange Days icons out here. Should watch that again-- no, I don't mean right now, so don't give me that look."
"Does it worry you in the slightest that you're holding a conversation with yourself?"
"Should it?"
"Oy vey."
"And I've never seen Oscar and Lucinda. Also, been a while since I've watched Wuthering Heights. Time for an amazon.com visit. Then I can look up some more icons."
"Sure, now you develop a schedule and some concentration."
"I just have to be properly motivated, that's all."
"So that's what they're calling it these days?"
"Hush."
"All I'm saying is that-- ooh, I like that one."
"Heh. Welcome to the dark side."

I want to watch The Constant Gardener again. And I do not have it on DVD yet. Woe. I at least need a good Constant Gardener icon.

Will look for one later, though. Right now, I really should go ahead and get some more housecleaning/rearranging done.

This has been your daily Pointless Update. Join us tomorrow for news of NaNo complications, and/or recovery updates after the writer attempts to do something stupid like move a bookshelf upstairs by herself later tonight.

Weekend's been decent so far. :-) Housecleaned on Friday and then went out to the lake for a little while, more housecleaning yesterday (and there will be more today, because we don't do it often, because we are both incapable of paying attention to dust).

Movie night was yesterday; watched--

1) The original Wicker Man. Which was so, so, soooo weird. I wonder what they're going to change in the remake. I'm pretty sure they're going to have to change a lot, especially since (SPOILERS AHEAD) for me, anyway, the emotional shock of the lead character's death was a little bit dulled by the fact that I'd spent the entire movie up to that point wanting to smack him. So . . . yeah.

2) Take the Lead. I don't care that it was a story I've seen onscreen 9,000,000 times. Antonio Banderas + tango = me owning it. Rawr.

And then I got up this morning and turned on the computer to check mail and then I thought-- wait a sec. Did that headline say what I thought it said?

There've been several times watching Irwin's show or reading about something he did when I've thought, "Wow, he was lucky to get out of that one." I know people are going to be making jokes about it, but if they're not done out of fondness, I don't think they're necessary. The guy did a lot for the environment, and though I didn't watch his show religiously I always liked him because he just seemed like a happy-go-lucky dork.

There is something to be said for the fact that he died while doing something he loved, but he still died too young and left a wife and two small children behind and I can't really find anything funny about that.

Chris took the day off of work so we could deal with cleaning (which reminds me-- I left a load of laundry in the washer. Must deal with that in a moment) and packing some more stuff and dealing with realtors/insurance people. Fun.

Now we're done for the day, and Chris is watching a James Bond movie. Goldfinger. Memorable for Odd Job (I still want that hat) and the name Pussy Galore. You know you've listened to Rent too much when she introduces herself and you say, "In person!"

I love making fun of the Bond movies; they're so utterly cheesy. But they're fun cheesy. I hear Daniel Craig's going to be the new Bond, and I don't think I've seen him in anything, so no previous impressions to go on. Wonder if they'll continue the cheesy tradition, or go with the tone of the novels-- I haven't read any yet, but I've heard that they were actually pretty dark.

So, as long as we're on the subject, who is everyone's 'actual' James Bond, and who would you like to see play him? I know for a lot of people it's Sean Connery, but I'm always going to associate Roger Moore with the role because he was the one to play it in the first Bond movie I saw. As for who I'd like to see play him-- I heard a rumor once that Ralph Fiennes was in talks, and I would've been curious to see that because that basically would've guaranteed a renovation from the "one liner, sex, gadget, bad pun, improbable escape, one liner, sex" formula.

I still want the toys, though. And I definitely wouldn't mind the cars.

No clue what I'm doing up at 7:30, since I stayed up so late last night.

Worked for most of the day-- cleaning up the house, helping put together bookshelves, doing laundry.

Then as a reward, we went to go see The Island. 10:00 showing, and the movie's a little over two hours (hence my wondering why I'm up before noon).

As for the movie itself... wheeeee. lol

Seen a few critics complaining about how it starts off as sci-fi and then turns into 'a Michael Bay' movie part of the way through, and you know what? I don't care.

I basically promised myself I wasn't going to go see a Michael Bay movie after I heard about the whole "WWII pilot saying, 'who's da man?' in Pearl Harbor", but . . . 2 hours of Ewan McGregor vs. principles. Sorry, principles.

It was a lot of fun. Had a few freaky moments, some incredibly cool cars/motorcycles, a very lucky Scarlett Johansen (who I don't think I've seen anywhere before, but I liked her in this. May have to cybercast her in something).

And about 3/4 of the way through, since this is a movie about clones, my suspicion is confirmed and I am rewarded by two Ewan McGregors up onscreen.

Me (as this whole amusing Dueling Brogues thing is going on): "Best. Movie. Ever." ;-)

Anyway, we did not win the Powerball last night, so unfortunately work still has to be done. First I have to go find some breakfast. Or do the sensible (lazy) thing and go back to bed.
