Lawsuit Over Brokeback Mountain in Classroom

Now see, this is actually one case where I'd be fully sympathetic with the guardians of the kid, except for the fact that they're suing for $500,000. I think it'd be simpler to just walk around wearing a t-shirt that says, "I'm an opportunist looking for a get-rich-quick scheme", but hey.

I'll keep an eye out for updates, because I would like to state right now that any sympathy I have for the guardians can be considered null and void if it turns out that the entire reason for their being upset is less "showing an R-rated movie without our permission" and more "EWWWW, gay people!!!" The cynical part of me says of course that's what it is, but at the moment I'm doing my best to be charitable.

That said, what in the world was that substitute thinking? I saw Brokeback Mountain and I liked it a lot, but it's just not going to be appropriate for most 12-year olds. I'm not even talking about the sex scenes, since those were pretty tame. The movie's a long character piece, which for a lot of kids translates into boring. Not to mention it's a love story, which makes the 'boring' factor even worse (at least if those 12-year olds are anything like I was at that age. I would've been sitting there sighing loudly and hoping that eventually werewolves would show up. But then, I was an odd child) ;-) Anyway, some of the violence, even if it's not explicitly onscreen, is pretty rough. Also, R rating. Last I knew, you aren't supposed to show an R-rated movie to kids in school who wouldn't be able get into the theater to see it. Unless you have permission from the parents/guardians, which obviously wasn't the case here.

I do tend to mock parents who throw huge hissy fits over their kid being exposed to 'inappropriate' material at school, but generally that's because they're suing for some ridiculous amount, or the 'kid' is 16-17, or it was a movie they saw on a voluntary field trip, or a book they read that the parents knew early on in the semester they'd be reading, etc. etc. These circumstances don't fit. Once in a while, there is a method to my madness. :-)

I'm remembering to watch the Oscars! What that means is, run in here and type during commercial breaks. Expect this post to be edited a lot over the next few hours. :-) I will lj-cut eventually, don't worry.

Preshow, let me just say that Rachel Weisz is totally the one I'm rooting for for Best Supporting Actress-- loved her performance in The Constant Gardener, and just in general everything I've seen her in.

If Rachel Weisz by some chance doesn't win, then Michelle Williams better.

And since those are the two movies I've seen that they've talked about so far, off to check out the TV again.

Okay, a couple of guys are singing something about it being hard to be a pimp. Whaaaaaa??

Other people I'm rooting for-- Reese Witherspoon, Joaquin Phoenix (Walk the Line was very unfairly snubbed in the Best Picture category, have I mentioned this?), Heath Ledger.

Jane Seymour was carrying this tiny little sparkly black and silver guitar, and I want one.

I want to go hug Heath Ledger, he looks so cute. Okay, so that'd end with, "Ummm . . . security? There's a squeaking girl with frizzy hair clinging to me, help," but hey. ;-) And I love Michelle Williams's dress.

The less said about Tim Burton's hair, the better. O_o

I really do need to see Crash soon. And Capote. And Munich. And...

That was kindof cute. They did a 'star-crossed love' montage to Garth Brooks's song "The Dance" showing clips from The New World, Brokeback Mountain . . . and King Kong. The last choice did have me snickering at the TV, yes.

Oscars themselves behind the cut. :-)

Would someone please explain why, given that I haven't seen the musical in years and I don't even like it that much to begin with, I have the opening song of Bye Bye Birdie stuck in my head?! Argh.

Anyway, the cold seems to have gone away, aside from a few random coughing fits. So that's a bonus. And I think we finally got all the escape routes blocked off, because the puppy hasn't gotten out of the yard for going on three days now.

While channel-flipping last night, I caught part of the Screen Actors Guild Awards . . . namely, the part where Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal were onstage presenting something. I think they were reading Brokeback Mountain's entry for Best Ensemble or something, I'm not sure; all I know was that at various times they each looked ready to crack up, and their trying-not-to-laugh looks made me crack up, so TV watching was nice yesterday.

Aside from that, nothing much going on. Off to type up some more notes. :-)

I stayed home from work today, because when I woke up I felt like my head was going to explode and my lungs were trying to escape my body every time I coughed. Yay cold season.

Anyway, after being an utter slug for most of the day, I feel better-- cough is still there, but at least the annoying invisible man with the sledgehammer has stopped whacking my head.

On the good side, LOST last night was pretty cool . . . yay for Claire and Sayid and Hurley and Sawyer and Eko, all of whom I love; I'm still not sure where I stand with Locke; and Charlie needs to be bapped with an 'everything is not all about you' stick. Or a 'maybe if you stop lying people will be more inclined to trust you' stick. Or both.

And the other day my parents were watching The Day After Tomorrow, and they got to the point where the girl was snuggling up with Jake Gyllenhaal 'to share body heat', and dad said he had an MST3K moment and immediately thought of Jake's character saying, "Well, that's fine, but I'd like this more if you were Heath Ledger." ;-)

Saw an article in the paper today about Brokeback Mountain, which made me happy-- I'm really looking forward to the movie, but it's another one that I know has a snowball's chance in you-know-where of playing here. So, will be waiting for rental, but in the meantime I will soak up the good critical chatter and interviews with the leads. :-)

The interview mentioned that both Gyllenhaal and Ledger were two of the final three competing for the lead in Moulin Rouge. I saw somewhere else that Catherine Zeta-Jones had tried out for Satine. Now, I haven't really seen Jake Gyllenhaal in anything, so I can't say much about him yet, but Heath Ledger is one of my "buy every movie of his" actors. Since the lead role went to another one, I can't really complain, but I would definitely love to see his and Catherine Zeta-Jones' takes on Christian and Satine.

In other news, I got woken up at about 3 a.m. this morning by Chris standing in the kitchen doorway telling me to hurry up and come to the window, because there were deer standing near the side of the house. And sure enough, there was a doe with two fawns. I love our new house. :-)
